Hello hello, March is here. It was 13 degrees and I could wear a half sleeved shirt without a jacket today morning and there was bright sunlight for a bit. Seasons really out here making a huge difference.
I don’t want to just do a sad rant, so here are some things I’ve watched/listened to instead, and maybe it’s interesting to someone.
Movies:
Emilia Pérez
Like most people, I only saw that one clip from this movie (Penis to Vagina) before watching this movie. This movie was something. I don’t get it. It was very random, and as someone who doesn’t really appreciate random things, I don’t think I was the right audience for it. I didn’t hate it, I sat through it. But I don’t know, I didn’t get it.
Kadhalikka Neramillai
This was a very Netflix movie, very rich, very pretty, very sanitised; I didn’t mind it. I’m starved of new rom-coms, so I was here for it. I quite like Nithya Menen as well, she’s the very stereotypical bubbly rom-com girl, and yeah, I’m here for all this nonsense.
Love Under Construction
I’m fully here for any and all light hearted rom-com adjacent content. Anything that’s not serious and murder adjacent, is something I’m okay to watch, if it’s half decent. This was half decent. It’s not some great masterpiece. But I was okay to sit and watch all six episodes.
Anora
One of those movies in the Oscar lot that I wasn’t particularly interested in watching, because I didn’t think I’d like it. I hadn’t watched Anora and The Brutalist when these movies came out. But one of my co-workers really sold Anora to me as a funny movie, and it won the Oscar, so I decided to sit down and watch it that evening. I quite liked it. It was funny and tragic all at the same time.
Picture This
I was actually kind of excited for this because it was a rom-com which had Simone Ashley. But I disliked it so much. I don’t get how you can fuck up rom-coms so bad. It was so bad, man. I was quite sad and disappointed.
Mickey 17
Caught this in the theatre and man, Rob Pattinson is so goofy. This was in that sci-fi dystopia genre, which again is a genre that I just struggle to enjoy. Sci-fi just puts me off so much, it’s so hard for me to engage in something that seems set in a different world. I do not have the imagination for all this. It was fine, but not my kind of movie at all. It’s saying very simple things, but I was quite disengaged throughout.
Podcasts:
My part-time work involves me just walking around everyday for three-hours doing nothing much in particular. It’s three solid hours I can’t necessarily scroll on my phone or do anything else. So it’s perfect to listen to podcasts. And I feel somewhat productive at the end of three hours, so that’s great. I’ve mostly linked everything here to Apple Podcasts cause it’s free on my phone to listen to.
The Ringer universe
C introduced me to this set of podcasts, and gave me all the backstory as to how they came to be. I enjoy The Big Picture, and The Rewatchables the most. I also like some stuff on The Watch, and The Town. These are all media related podcasts, quite long, quite entertaining.
The Hindu
They have a couple of podcasts called In Focus by The Hindu, Parley by The Hindu, and The Hindu on Books, which are all decent. Helps me feel like I somewhat know what’s going on in the country.
The News Minute and News Laundry
I’ve been trying to figure out how to get like a 6 PM news hour headline equivalent from some Malayalam channel on YouTube. But I still haven’t been able to figure it out. But The News Minute has a Friday thing called South Central where they do a recap of top headlines from the South, and a couple of discussions on major news items. News Laundry has a weekly round up called NL Hafta which is also decent.
Higher Education related
To feel like I’m also listening to stuff related to my area of research, I’ve just been trying to figure out some good content related to higher education available. The World of Higher Education, and the Meet the Education Researcher is decent.
Miscellaneous
I kind of like The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart’s podcast annoys me to no end, but I prefer it over all of the rest of the Late Night folk from America at this point. John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight is on YouTube, but I like that as well.
Music:
After watching A Complete Unknown, Bob Dylan songs was the fixation for a bit. A small detail in Dilli Billi’s last post got me listening to old Malayalam music again. She specifically suggested Sagarangale and that was on repeat for a while. So now, I just keep going back to a lot of Malayalam songs from the 80s and 90s. Some from the early 2000s also, I guess. Hrudayavum is a current favourite.
That’s all for now. Hope everyone’s doing well. Until next time.
